David Jenkins –
It completely met my expectations, after reading info on Photo equipment websites.

I purchased this camera based on co-workers recommendation. I work in the petrochemical industry and need to go inside vessels. This camera worked well in dirty environment. It is a sealed camera so dust and rust will not enter into the intricate portions of camera which is why I purchased it. Last camera I purchased had to many moving parts that allowed for particulates to get inside and disrupt the workings of it.

I spend a lot of time outdoors, in all weather and all temperatures. The camera’s ruggedness has been appreciated as I stuff it into a framebag on my bike or take it along in colder temps and don’t have to worry about it the battery dying. Oh, it also takes great pics.

I intend to use this camera when I am kayaking or swimming. I like to swim and kayak in the ocean. This camera is a better choice than a GoPro for me because I am less interested in video. I like the layout of the controls and it gets a sharp picture.

I bought because I am going deep sea fishing while I am in Hawaii on vacation. I taken it out for a couple of test runs and it takes great pictures. I not tried it underwater yet as I have not had an opportunity but it seems to be sealed up very nicely. I am really looking forward to using on my vacation. Btw, it is very easy to operate. It is has a GPS feature and I have taken some pictures. I have not figured out how to see it on my pics yet but haven’t put a lot of effort into. Note: if you turn the GPS on, it continues even if the camera is off and does drain the battery. But the GPS is easy to turn on and off.

Lens and screen scratches easily. Too easily for a rugged camera. Pictures are so-so. I tend to use my phone except when I’m in a wet environment..and then the TG likes to fog up. Sigh.

The TG-6 allows to to get some incredible shots while hiking and rock scrabbling. Showing the seed pod, 5mm in diameter, of a creosote bush.

I have not taken this camera into the water, the biggest selling point for this camera. It was dipped into a stream to take hybrid photo of a waterfall and it looks super cool. The photo quality is basic and on the low end of today’s spectrum, so you won’t likely be blowing your photos into large posters, however, the reason you get this camera is for the waterproof and shockproof qualities. The super macro (microscope) setting for this camera is simply AMAZING!!! You can get right up to your subject and snap super close ups, it gets even more exciting when you shoot video. For this you may want to consider the flash diffuser (sold separately) or the LED Macro Ring light (also sold separately). The controls on this camera can get a bit overwhelming, since there are so many options to choose from. Best is to do the basic settings at home and assign the 2 custom settings to what you use the camera for most. I also got the wide angle lens for this camera (yep, sold separately) to get a wider view.
This camera is good for shallow depth as it is, like snorkeling or pool, but if you take it Scuba Diving, I strongly recommend getting the PT-059 underwater housing to keep the camera completely safe. Video lights, Flash lights and a camera tray are optional for better results. Search online for Olympus TG-6 Backscatter and you’ll find great reviews for this camera and the wide variety of options it has.
I hope to update this review after some more underwater use.
