Gonna be better soon! There are others better on amazon.com, good resolution.. but could be much better for a 8k!
Don’t spend your 3500 or 4000 in this camera! Not worth the price you pay! I will return it!
Regular users will have a hard time to use the software! Device for professionals!
This camera is not made for you! Does not work with youtube videos! Wast of money!

I bought the Insta360 Pro directly from Insta360 before it was available on Amazon. I was one of the first.

Overall, you can’t get this resolution of 360 photography for a better price.

I have a few complaints though.

    1) I think my biggest complaint is the fact that it doesn’t know the date or time. Every picture and video i snap with it, it labels 2012 12 31. I’ve been on trips snapping lots of media. When i sort through it, none of it is in any kind of order and everything is labelled 2012 12 31. Here’s a few files from a recent session, PIC_2012_12_31_16_05_44, VID_2012_12_31_16_04_07, VID_2012_12_31_16_07_44. If i shoot multiple sessions from a few days, the files won’t even be chronologically 2012. Every other file could be from any session on any of the days. It really is tedious to sort through and try to figure what was shot where. I thought that Insta360 would come out with a firmware update to fix this but they never have. I initially contacted support but never got a solution, it’s just been a headache. I’m a computer professional and i wonder if there is a non-existent or faulty battery built into this device like a computer motherboard has a CR2032 battery for just this purpose. This problem has been a major inconvenience. I’m sure i’ve lost things in the mess of files.

    2) When it first came out, the fan noise was always in the recordings. I suggested to them to allow the camera to turn on the fan after a certain amount of time. They implemented this in a firmware update. It was a nice feature. Of course it would be far better if they simply put in the quietest fan on the planet but they didn’t. Initially the new firmware functionality would record without the fan, then after 15 minutes it turned the fan on, but continued recording. In the latest firmware, they have it stop recording at 15 minutes. Fan noise is a real quality problem. If you really want good recordings, plan on having another device for clean audio (i do).

    3) The stitching software now requires you to login to their servers anytime you want to use the software. Not a big fan of that. I simply want to install the software on my computer and use it whenever i want without checking in with Insta360.

    4) This camera is really finicky about media. One session it likes the memory i’m using and the next session it doesn’t. I’ve learned to make sure i have 3-5 storage media with me, in case it decides to reject the one i’m using (that worked fine in the past).

As i stated above, overall i’m happy to be able to capture 8k 360 video. I think for the price of this camera though, my complaints above shouldn’t exist. Having to figure out which 2012 files are which, having fan noise prevalent in the audio, tracking my usage of the stitching software and inconsistent media recognition are things that should have been solved before this camera went on sale. And even worse, should have been solved years later.

My next 360 pro camera might not be an Insta360. I’ll definitely do my homework when shopping for it.

Here’s a sample of something i recorded a couple weeks ago. It’s recorded in 8k and converted to 4k, then posted on YouTube,

As i continue with this camera, i’ll try to update this review.

I am an optical scientist very interested in 360 photography but found most cameras lacking in resolution, hence I was most interested when the Insta360 8K camera came out and recently obtained it. However, to put it simply the Insta360 camera did not work, I spent hours trying to connect it to my WiFi, then trying a direct lan cable to no effect. It seems you cannot even download pictures via a USB cable. Hence today I returned it, don’t know what the issues are but they seem major and I hope Insta sorts them out as we need innovation in this field 🙂

Insta360 pro has served me well this year. I have been able to upload some great photos with this camera. The work flow of this camera is really good with the external usb for storage or the SD card for internal use. I am able to take about 30 shots, stitch photos in camera or on the computer, edit photos, and upload them in about 1.5 hours. Considering that this is 8k image quality, that is really good. If you want to do videos or pictures for virtual tours this is the camera for you. I am also writing this review a day after the beta 12k firmware update. The weakness that this camera had for slightly grainy dark shots, has been improved immensely with the new 2.0 firmware update. This camera also now has great image stabilization and smoother video frame rate than before. This camera has a lot of potential and the developers are still working on improving it. Update: The camera is older now, but honestly the workflow and capability of this camera is still top of the line. Even with the new insta360pro 2 this one is cheaper and has most of the advantages of the newer model, through updates. This camera can work with the range extender farsight and has up to 9 shot HDR that works really well. In terms of photography this is just as good as the pro 2. To step up to a better camera you would have to go to the titan which is awesome but pricey and much bigger (can’t put on a 35ft pole like you can the pro 1 or 2. So in my opinion even in the second year of this camera it is still a beast of a 360 camera.

I’ve had one of these cameras for a weekend. The hardware is so-so. The OLED screen is tiny and the response to user input (button presses) is frustratingly slow.
The firmware and the software are terrible. It refused to record video, even at the lowest resolution, complaining that the media is not fast-enough. It was a 64GB 2000x speed Flash XD card.
The HDR mode is useless. It can only capture 3 exposures, and it saves them into terrible-quality JPEG files.
Your best bet for proper HDR capture is to shoot in RAW, and manually do 7-8 exposures (extremely tedious), then HDR-combine and stitch them on a computer.
The cameras have a fixed iris, which is a big problem, because even at the lowest ISO setting (100), and maximum shutter speed (1/8000) the Sun’s disc is way over-exposed.
Also, because of the physical layout, there’s no way to use ND filters.
So, it’s impossible to capture a full-range HDR image with this camera, which is very disappointing for something this expensive.
