I would have given this product a 0 if it was an option. I bought this item for my grandson last May (2020) for his birthday in June. It stopped working after 5months, having only been used a few times. The touch screen is frozen and nothing works. Both my daughter-in-law and I have spent the last several months calling about the problem, only to be given several different ways of trying to fix it ourselves. None of the instructions have worked. This item has a year warranty, but we can’t get any information on how to return this defective product. I would not recommend buying from this seller or buying this product.

There’s not a lot I can say that hasn’t already been said about how fantastic the camera itself is, so I’ll focus on the “refurbished” aspect and things that are less than stellar on mine.

Even though this is a “refurbished” product by any other name, it arrived like new and for the most part everything has worked flawlessly. I’m not too worried about it being refurbished, as it comes with a full one-year warranty, and in addition I purchased the 3-year “accident protection” warranty which covers accidents from day one and everything else after the manufacturer warranty runs out. I feel pretty confident that any issues I run into will be covered, but will update my post if I encounter any problems.

I am concerned about how sloppy/loose the USB-C port is, but I don’t know if that’s normal play for either the GoPro or the cable they provided or whether my unit is flawed. Maybe that’s why it was a “refurb”? However, I haven’t had any issues so far with connectivity or with charging.

I’m a little less than thrilled with the android app to remotely control the GoPro. I’ve had some issues connecting or remaining connected to the unit, though usually a restart of the android device will solve the problem. There doesn’t seem to be rhyme or reason as to why sometimes it won’t connect or will drop connection. However, this is a common problem with a lot of bluetooth devices, so I’m not going to knock them too hard for it.

As others may have pointed out, the GoPro lacks a timer function. I think between voice control (“GoPro Start Recording”) and the android app, GoPro must have felt it was redundant. But voice control is not always optimal from a distance or in noisy environments, and there are several reasons you may not be able to use the remote app (for example, an older smart phone that won’t run the app). In such situations, a solution DID occur to me. Record your voice saying “GoPro Start Recording” onto any voice recorder that you can set near the GoPro for playback. Add as many seconds of blank space as you need before the command. Voila, an ad hoc timer!! Alternatively, you can call one stationary phone near the GoPro from another remote phone, answer the stationary phone and put it on speaker phone. Walk to wherever you need to be in the shot with the remote phone, then say “GoPro Start Recording”. This works quite well – I’ve done it with 2 cell phones in a noisy environment. But it’s a good idea to put the remote phone on “mute” until you’re ready to issue the command.

Finally, I should mention that I purchased a HoHem iSteady Pro2 3-axis Gimbal for my GoPro, to add a little extra stabilization as well as a means to grip the camera better for handheld work. Additionally, it allows you to set up hands-free and time-lapse pans and tilts, and can be used to charge the GoPro. I think it was a very wise addition for just $100. I also sprang an extra $17 for the “smartphone holder clip” which will be handy now to hold a larger screen to see what I’m recording, but I eventually intend to use it to hold an audio recorder and stereo microphone for better sound (syncing up post-production).

So, I ordered this camera and received it yesterday. The camera itself appeared to be in perfect, unused, new condition. No scratches or other indications that it was less then new as indicated on the box. Believe me, I did a minute inspection of the camera, with a magnifying glass under bright light looking for any indication to the contrary. No dust in the battery compartment, no fingerprints or smudges on the protecting plastic over the lens and screen, nothing.

The box contained the camera, already in a case on one side and a box with accessories on the other. The case that comes with the camera is just a plastic frame that offers little to no protection for the camera. I would suggest getting some tempered glass screen protectors which are available for this camera.

When I opened the accessory box, I found it contained one each curved and flat bottom mounts, two 3M adhesive pads, the battery and charging cable. However what was not in the box was any documentation, quick start guide, owners manual, nothing. That discovery started to tickle that back of my brain.

After charging the battery for a couple of hours, the camera was finally ready to be used. I purchased this camera to mount on my motorcycle helmet and record my rides. With no included owners manual, I was able to find a PDF version on Go Pro’s web site which I downloaded. After reviewing the more salient sections, I was ready to give it a test ride. This is where the disappoint began.

The camera locked up…. Just plain froze. The only way I could unlock it was to take it out of it’s case, and remove and reinsert the battery. Then it started working again, for a short period of time, before it locked up and froze again. As you can imagine, this was completely unacceptable. Now, to be fair, when it did work, the image quality of the video was great. The image stabilization worked fabulously. Again, when the camera worked.

I returned it today. Rather then request a refund, I requested it be replaced. Perhaps I just received a dodgy unit. I really do like this camera and truly want it to work for me. But I want a camera that is going to work every time, as designed. This is the e-commerce version, which from everything I’ve found, means it’s exactly like the retail version, only without the fancy packaging. If this is in fact true, I can’t believe the retail version of this camera is so faulty.

I will update this review when the replacement camera arrives.

    Updated Review

09/22/2020 This is an update to my original review. I am kicking my rating up to 4 stars, and I’ll explain why no 5 star rating in my review.

I returned the first Hero 5 because of two primary problems. First it keep locking up/freezing on me. And second, it would not properly record audio with the video. I believe I have resolved both those problems.

Problem #1-Locking Up/Freezing: In my research, I discovered that not all SD cards are equal. While one might work well enough in your cell phone to record music and even the phones video processing, it might not be able to handle the read/write speeds in a dedicated digital camera.

I suspect that was my problem. I was using the SD card out of my cell phone, (image 1) which worked fine in the phone. But my research into the freezing problem led me to suspect the card was not capable of handling the faster read/write speeds on the Go Pro.

Following the advice on the Go Pro web site, I purchased their recommended SD card (image #2) and have not had a problem with the camera locking up/freezing.

Problem #2-Audio: The problem I was having with this was the camera would only record audio for the first video clip. All clips after that were video only, no accompanying audio. The main reason I purchased this camera in the first place was to record and narrate my travels on my motorcycle. I really didn’t want to have to take a silent video and dub in the audio later.

I learned the problem was in the cameras Quick Capture feature. If you power on the camera by long pressing the Mode button, the QC function works as designed. Press the QC button once, the camera beings to record. Press it again, it stops recording, saves the video, and powers down the camera. Press it again and it powers on the camera and begins recording, press it a send time and it stops recording, saves the video and powers the camera off. And so on. Great for conserving battery life.

However, if you’re using an external microphone, that feature does not work. I have my external mic mounted inside my helmet. The mic plugs into the Go Pro Audio adapter on one side, and the adapter plugs into the camera on the other side. If you try using the QC button to power on the camera instead of long pressing the Mode button, it will only capture the audio for the first clip. Thereafter you are capturing silent movies. So the key to successful video/audio recording, when using an external microphone, is power on the camera using the Mode button, not the QC button.

And this is the reason for my 4 star review. Overall, I have to say I really like this camera. And I can argue with the e-commerce price verse the price of a retail version of this camera.

I was happy to open the package, but it’s not in the stock box for some reason. However, the most important thing is that after I connect to my phone I cannot take any video because it’s started blurring. The video quality is so bad I couldn’t keep watching it anymore. I feel like this product is a rebuilt product since the camera is a little off position. I don’t recommend people to purchase this product.
