The initial reason I bought this camera was for YouTube. I did a lot of research on the best budget camera for 1080P 60FPS and ended up looking at the SL2. All the professional reviews I read and watched (like the review by Chris Winter) said that this was a great camera for the price and was an excellent choice for beginner to intermediate photographers.
I am very new to photography and this is my first DSLR. In the two months I’ve had this, I’ve never regretted this purchase once. Now whenever there is a possibility of being in a location where I could take some cool pictures, I take my camera with me. I get so excited when I get to use it.
Pros-
The included kit lens is a steal. I feel the 18-55mm focal range is great for a beginner photographer. Gives you the ability to zoom without quality loss and at the current price, it’s only $100 more than just the body. I didn’t realize how expensive lenses are, so $100 for a decent lens is crazy good.
The Feature Assistant. This feature is great for people who are learning about photography. Using the dial to switch to different modes will show a basic screen on the LCD showing how different setting affect the outcome of your picture.
LCD autofocus. When using the LCD screen, the dual-pixel auto-focus is really good at tracking faces. REALLY GOOD.
Battery life. Now, I can’t compare this to other cameras as I’ve never owned another one, but after about 700ish pictures and some video, the battery meter still shows 50%. The battery life exceeded expectations.
Small and lightweight. Again, nothing to compare this too, but this is very comfortable to hold for long periods of time. The body and kit lens together weight less than two pounds.
Picture quality. Right now, the pictures I’m taking aren’t the best as I’m still learning, but despite that I’m really loving the quality of what I take. I’ve also seen what professionals have taken with this camera and it’s great.
Touch focus. When I’ve taken some b-roll video of inanimate objects, sometimes the auto focus has a hard time settling on one thing, causing it to blur for a split second while it redetermines where it should focus. You can easily touch the screen where you want it to focus and it will stay focused on that spot even if you move the camera around a bit.
Video quality. Now, this doesn’t do 4K, so that might be a con for some people, but I’m perfectly fine shooing at 1080P. I prefer to record at 60FPS as well, which this camera does quite well. Besides the auto-focus getting a bit goofy sometimes when filming objects instead of people, it still does a great job. Very happy with the quality and with a lower aperture lens, I’m sure the quality would be even better.
Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. I use this all the time to transfer pictures to my phone either to see how well my photos are turning out or to quickly edit photos and upload them to social media from my phone. This has been a more useful feature than I thought it would be.
LCD screen. From what I saw when looking for a camera to buy, most of the cameras had a fixed screen or didn’t have a touchscreen. The SL2 has both a touchscreen and an adjustable screen. This is very handy when you are vlogging or trying to use the screen at an angle where you normally wouldn’t be able to see the screen. The touchscreen also is nice and has helped me from transitioning from taking pictures on my phone to using a DSLR.
The kit lens. This is a great lens to get with this body if you’re a beginner. Even though the aperture is a bit high for my taste( I shoot a lot in low lighting), it gives you the ability to zoom and take great pictures from a farther distance or shoot close ups without having to change lenses. For $100 extra, it’s a steal.
Cons-
Kit lens F Stop. Not a huge con since this lens was only $100 extra with the body, but the lens isn’t the best for low-light shooting.
Built-in mic. The built in mic start having major issues when the noise levels start getting loud. Also not the greatest mic. Bought an external mic which handled audio much better.
To be honest, I can’t think of a lot of cons and that’s probably because this is my only experience with more professional grade cameras. I have really enjoyed using this camera and it has gotten me very excited to learn so I can take full advantage of the hardware.

4 Month Review recap:
I would buy this again. This is a great camera to learn, grow, create, and even make a few bucks. Out of the box auto setting are great, learn to use the manual settings to get the most out of photos and video. The camera comes equipped with easy to follow guide but honestly learning the camera setting makes all the difference. Audio suck, if you plan to do video buy a shotgun mic. Light and versatile.
Additional equipment in order recommended:
Canon EF-S 24mm f/2.8 STM Lens ( great lens overall specially for tight conditions, equal to 35mm on a full frame sensor),
SanDisk Extreme Pro (Also have an Extreme as a back up),
RODE VideoMicro (Recommend),
OAproda batteries (recommend),
Adobe suite (save yourself the time and hassle of the free apps, this was an unexpected but necessary and now welcome expense, lightroom classic and Premier just make life easy),
K&F ND filter( helps with managing over exposure), Amazon Basics UV lens (swap when ND not in use),
basic tripod,
GorillaPod 3k kit (the legs are prone to pressure cracks),
Wish List:
323 quick release system ( swapping between GorillaPod and tripod is not fun),
Portable Light Panel (Night time video and Photo
telephoto Lens with image stabilization likely 70-200mm
My experience: beginner
I chose to write this to help people make an educated decision.
Reasons why i would want to upgrade:
Not water resistant ( makes sense that it is missing at this price point)
C-log ( expansive dynamic range and wide exposure latitude- provides more data to work with in post production, only high end DSLR’s currently have this option)
Reasons why not to upgrade: The additional bells and whistles come at a big cost and increase in weight. The weight would reduce my ability to shoot for an extended period of time. Additionally, If the camera was worth significantly more, It would deter me from taking the camera with me on everyday adventures.
Need: I wanted to learn to vlog and photograph. I would primarily be capturing footage in cramped area (soccer stadium), with a lot of chaos( drunk soccer fans), in events that would last the majority of the day (tailgate before and after match). I needed something light, versatile, with decent battery life. That could capture video and photo in a range of lighting conditions.
Photo:
Great quality. The tripod combined with the eos app is godly, allows you to take the photo with out causing movement. Long exposure shots is where it is at.
Video:
The quality is good but the missing image stabilization is noticeable. Make sure to pair this with a lens with image stabilization and quiet focus.Small and light weight, I can film most of the day without any real strain. The additional batteries were a steal and enhanced my experience exponentially. The gorilla pod helps me keep a grip on the camera and get video i would otherwise not be able to get but the plastic used is prone to cracks and so I don’t trust my equipment on it anymore.
Audio:
Just buy a Rode mic, no need for the pro versions the quality is fine with videomicro. My audio sounded fine until it was rendered and uploaded to youtube. I experienced low audio and had to crank it up in the SL2 audio settings.
Learning Curve: Point and shoot in auto everything is cake. Manual requires a little more effort but makes your photos and video much better. I suggest learning about white balance, shutter speed, aperture, iso, Raw files and post production (loaded subject). Learn, apply and repeat.

I was waiting for a camera like this that had all the best features Canon has to offer in an affordable compact package. I sold my semi pro 7D mk2 to buy this and am happy for it. Of course I miss the advanced features of the 7D mk2 but this little camera is small enough to take anywhere without looking like a photo geek and has a few features not found on the 7D mk2 like flip out touch screen and WiFi/Bluetooth. It may lack durability and has fairly unexciting autofocus but the features packed into this upgraded version are enough to keep you from spending big bucks on the 80D or on another system like Fujifilm.
If you are considering the 80D but can’t afford it right now and you are willing to work around not having a headphone jack this is a good alternative.
You might like shooting in Live View mode all the time if you’re so inclined and have become accustomed to your smartphones functionality.
With touch shutter, touch focus and the best connectivity yet, it’s a joy to use.

I did my research for the smallest, APSC sized sensor camera (with at least 24 megapixels) also must have had a flip out screen. It also must have an external mic jack. This camera checked all those boxes. Have been amazed with it since owning it. WiFi connectivity is great. Light weight, tons of lens choices and if you read some reviews this sensor is comparable almost identical to the 70D and therefore the low light permformance is just as good, and at a cheaper price point. The only knock is the low frames per second (5) and minimal focus points (9) but keep in mind that only applies if you’re using the viewfinder/eyepiece and not looking at the screen/live view which I do 95% of the time anyway. I do notice the 5 frames per second as I have a small child and you need to be quick to catch the right look/smile sometimes and I don’t use it for wildlife photography, just architecture and landscape photography and it’s perfect for that.
It’s missing a few bells and whistles…no built in horizon leveling or focus peaking. Those are the only things I’ve really noticed that I would use from time to time if they were there.
Video quality is great, the low light performance can always be improved with faster lens. When compared to the t77i or some of the more expensive “step ups” I just can’t see how the extra cost is justified. For the price, at the time of this review, I just don’t think this camera can be beat.
***2 YEAR UPDATE***
Have used this camera now for 2 years and in that time I purchased a Canon 6D Mark 2. I put this one up for sale and never had any offers on it so I decided to just keep it. Was the best decision I’ve made. I still, constantly use this one for work (need something smaller and portable but still offers nice photo quality) and it’s just easier to use (it’s simpler) so if I’m in a hurry or don’t have time to deal with the more complicated menu of the 6D2. I also put this camera on a painters pile to “aerial” shots for work and I would never do that with the 6D2. So whether this is your main camera or a secondary one I’m positive you’ll find good use for it.

The Canon SL2 is an excellent Camera it exceeded all my expectations (if not i would have not bought this product). This is incredibility light but do not be fooled by its compact design this thing is packed with features.I have to start off with the dig!c 7 processor witch really makes a difference in low light conditions and helps noise reduction in the shadows. Then there is the new dual pixel auto focus which ensures you will have tack sharp images every single time it also comes with a face tracking function which works magnificently well!.To be honest the 18-55 mil lens is not that bad its good for close ups and has that extra bit of zoom to help with further subjects. No it does not do 7fps in burst mode but then again you are not paying an arm and a leg for this bad boy! As far as video quality goes it’s acceptable it does do 60fps at 1080p (full HD) so you could use it for B-roll and it also has the privilege of shooting RAW files which is just great for professional editing.Oh and i almost forgot the fully articulating screen which allows you to film yourself in a “selfie“ mode. All in all this camera is good for all levels of photography (i am not kidding when i say that) whether you are a pro or you are just starting out like me at the age of 14.I have had this camera for a week now and i am already in love with it.Here are some of my best un-edited photos right off the camera.

This camera is everything I was looking for to fulfill my childhood dream – to start learning photography.
My favorite points of the camera are:
– The size of the camera. It’s smaller than the average Canon camera, which is perfect for my hands and feels so good in hands.
– The pivoting screen – super convenient for flatlays, product’s photography and videos.
– The touch screen – a time saver + so easy to focus on the subject.
– The built-in learning software (optional) – it’s so helpful at the very beginning of the first steps in photography.
– The Wi-Fi and Bluetooth function that let me connect my cellphone and laptop seamlessly in seconds.
Also, I want to mention the Canon Coach app has education videos created by amazing Peter McKinnon, that is very helpful at the beginning as well.
The last sweet point – I paid the Warehouse Deal price for the camera.
Two words about the lens: the best use without the flash is during the daylight and outside.

There are so many great aspects to this camera. Beyond being a reasonable price for an entry/enthusiast level DSLR, this camera doesn’t skimp out on premium features. There are a lot of great options out there for beginners and those that are enthusiasts, like the t6, t6i, and even the t7. Now these camera’s all share something in common and that’s the extensive library of lenses canon has to offer! They all take phenomenal photo’s and can take decent video as well. However where the sl2 really makes a difference is in how it handles video.
The sl2 packs a few features that are very appealing to those who want to capture memories or even find use of a DSLR for vlogging/streaming. The pop-out touch screen is one of the greatest features here. Having a nice display for reference allowing you to help center yourself, and find the right angle or even just making the experience of filming a subject all that more comfortable. The battery life is excellent, maintaining a consistent several hours of photography and film. The external mic option is a huge factor that in my opinion set’s it above other entry level cameras. While it still generally is preferred to use a lapel mic, it’s a nice feature to have. Lastly the size and weight make the camera very comfortable to use and travel with. The sl2 is one of the lightest options on the market in terms of DSLR cameras.
If you’re a beginner or a hobbyist this is the perfect camera for you!
