If you need an external monitor and a way to record very long periods… This is your recorder… (When it’s $499!)
Cons:
1. Bright but not bright enough during the day without a sun hood.
2. Does but come with a sun hood and for the price it should’ve at least come with a black cardboard one!!!!!
3. No way to delete footage from the unit itself… Must use a computer!
4. Time with Sony NP970 battery is not quite long enough… Only 2.5hrs. understandable but that means that’s the record limit.
5. Does not record Cinema DNG Raw… Only Pro Res, Pro Res Raw and DnXHD
Pros:
1. SSD recording
2. Pro Res and Pro Res Raw recording
3. Ease of use
4. Bright
5. Lut Preview
6. Pro Res Raw (NOT AVAILABLE FOR DAVINCI RESOLVE 16)
* WESTERN DIGITAL is the only SSD I’ve found fast enough to record 4k 60p 10bit 4:2:2 400 mbps All-I from the G Panasonic GH5/GH5S

There are so many YouTube videos explaining the features of the Ninja V that an additional review, just doesn’t seem necessary.
I would say, that if you have a newer camera (post 2019) with excellent auto focus and object tracking, which can record video at 400Mb/second or more, then you may not need this device unless you are a professional video camera operator, or working with other professionals in videography.

My honest review, I have shot a few videos with this and it’s not working for me ( meaning) as you re ored on the monitor it has a delay from the video to the words. When you are shooting with your focus meter on I believe it’s focus meter the then when u can set to focus on the object and u can see what’s in focus. But any who, with that onand recording on the monitor it adds noise and grain to the footage. I thought it was my lens but recording on the actually camera it’s perfect. I’m shooting on the S1H 24-70 LMount. After you are recording for long period of time the monitor lags hard.
Mabe it’s me because I’m new to the atomos stuff so it my be me with the settings or whatever but these are my issues. Touch screen good colors good. I know it’s to late to return it so I will just use this just for a bigger monitor. Until otherwise

After pouring through reviews I decided to get this for my a7iv setup. The ability to record along with the depth of monitoring tools on this thing is simply amazing. The brightness and accuracy of colors also blows my other no name monitor away.
Some things to note however. In comparison to the monitor-only Shinobi, this thing is pretty heavy. And since it’s doing more work than the Shinobi, having extra and/or larger batteries in comparison will be key. But keep in mind that by the time you have all that, you’ll have a pretty heavy piece of kit on your camera. I tried this for a session with my RS3 gimbal and I got a pretty solid workout chasing after talent. The unit also heated up quite a bit in my environment so the fan noise was noticeable. However since we were booming audio this wasn’t an issue.
All in all if you can make use of all the features then go for it. There is a reason why so many swear by this monitor. However for my regular gigs and uses, I decided to just get some quality memory cards and the Shinobi. I’m still wondering if I made the right choice however and might grab one of these again when budget allows.

First let me say that this is an amazing product! I have NO regrets investing in the Ninja V, it has put my Sony A7iii on steroids. Not only that but my work flow is so much better. I’m usually a gorilla style type of shooter so if you know, it is very important to be in complete focus and to be able to know what’s going on when you’re running and gunning. I haven’t even tapped into all of the features yet but am excited to do so!
So now for the VERY IMPORTANT TIP. I found this out the hard way so hopefully this will help others to not make the same mistake I did.
I usually shoot 4k on my A7iii with a Crane 2, the Ninja V outputs fine with no issues at all, but when I shot in HD for slow motion, there was a major problem! Now I’m not sure if this is the case for other cameras but if you’re shooting with a A7iii this is for you (I would still check for other cameras as well). When shooting HD and recording on the Ninja V, the Ninja will actually record the cameras Screne Meters into the footage you are shooting! This caused me to lose all the footage I shot for the day, thank God I was backup camera.
The FIX is this: go to Menu / Setup / HDMI Settings / HDMI Info Display and turn it OFF! I may be completely ignorant to this but I had no idea the Ninja V would have recorded the Screne Meters on HD only. Hope this helps someone!

I solely bought the Ninja V for video gameplay capture.
Pros
The built quality is excellent
The device allows you to record a video with LUTs.
The video quality is 7/10.
Supports various SSD drives
Updated frequently
Records in 4K/60 output
Cons
Expensive device and you’ll spend over £900 (SSD, H265 and other services) if you want the full experience whereas other capture cards cost less than £200.
Does not support HDR on Xbox series X
Various Issues with sound (cutscene sound is usually out of sync )
Images look dry on the PS5
Device partially advertised as a capture card but the manufacturer(Ninja) has never tested this item on any next gen console.
Additional services and video format cost an arm and a leg.
You’re only able to record 1 hour footage with a 1TB SSD and 2 hours for 2TB SSD
I paid £99 for H265 video format, this was advertised to offer more 99 hours of video recording but I get less than 2 hours and 15 minutes. Not a happy customer.
The customer service team is unable to provide any support regarding video game capture. As previously stated , the device has never been tested on Next gen console .
Although not a necessity , gaining access to Bluetooth will cost you over £135. You’ll need to purchase a separate component.
The device gets worse with each newer update ( understandable as it’s not tested for streaming or video game capture )
Overall the ninja V is such an expensive device and mostly suitable for photography.

I am a professional photographer just getting into video and because I need NLOG on my Nikon Z7, I needed to buy the Ninja V monitor/recorder. Following the second firmware upgrade since I bought it, the unit has crashed and refuses to get past the dreaded Error screen. I’ve used it once since September 2021. I’ve contacted the Atomos Support Desk who have been no help at all. No I have to fork out to return the unit in the hope of a replacement! Product good, support a big fat zero!

The Monitor/Recorder. An upgrade any camera into a beast.

The Ninja V is a fantastic bit of kit, I looked up the reviews online before I purchased it. Be aware that when you buy this not only will you have to buy SSD card and battery the device will probably need calibrated, please before you buy look into this as I’m just about to purchase the X-Rite i1 and an extortionately priced cable from Atomos.

I purchased this to allow 10-bit color when recording from a Panasonic DVX200 camcorder. It took a bit of fiddling around before it would work. The initial settings I used apparently were more than the Atamos could handle, so i had to step down a bit in order to get the record “button” to go from grey to red (indicating it was active) so that I could initiate recording. It was frustrating, as I bought this to improve the quality of the videos I was capturing. But I was able to record 10-bit as stated and I guess it was my fault for not having realized that it couldn’t handle 10-bit with everything else maxed out. I’m not sure if the limitation was even the Atamos, the DVX200, or the storage drive. I suspect that the Atamos was the issue but I could be wrong.
Whatever the case, it still enables me to get better footage (greater color depth) than I otherwise could out of the DVX200. And the screen is easy on the eyes with plenty of assistive features like false colors, focus peaking, and the like. The DVX200’s screen isn’t very large or bright, so this is a nice step up in that regard. Pass-through via HDMI to an even larger screen also worked just fine. I used the larger screen to see what my fottage would look like without any enhancements and the Atamos screen to gauge focus and exposure with the built-in assistive tools.
So, overall, I can recommend this tool. It’s probably worth researching exactly how it will pereform with your specific source device but, that aside, it’s a purchase I recommend for those who need a better screen and the ability to record externally.
