    First of all, I have to say that this is my first camera with interchangeable lenses. I have owned it for about a month and I am still learning to use it. This camera offers many possibilities and it has a good auto mode for those who start using it without any time to read the instruction manual. The IQ is good, the size is adequate for travelling (not as compact as my Canon Powershot S120) but obviously the capabilities are way different and it feels high quality and sturdy. I hesitated between buying a Fujifilm XT-30 and this one and I went with Sony because of the cheaper lenses and the selfie-tiltable screen. No regrets so far.

    I bought this camera as a second body to my A7iii(upgrading to the A7iv) for b-rolls and as a carry-around camera for travel and hiking.
    I’m very satisfied with the quality of pictures that come out of it. As someone whose first camera was a full-frame, it took me awhile to get adjusted to the crop sensor images. But if you understand how to use 1.5 crop factor, it’s easy to achieve an equivalent full frame look with a lens that is 1.5 times wider.
    Having said this, sometimes, at a glance, I can’t tell which pictures I snapped with the A7iii or the A6400.
    This is a great entry level camera if you want to pursue photography as a hobby or if you have a more expensive camera that you don’t want to carry around to minimize your risks and liabilities for lower budget projects.

    As a martial arts content creator, this is a great camera to have when a camera man is not available. Auto focus really helps when you’re repositioning so much. My Rebel T3i gave out after about 10 years. So my only concern is how long this camera will last. Overall it helps me accomplish what I need it to.

    Trust me, I would have stayed with Canon FOREVER but I was tired of the subpar 4k video on equally-priced Sony cameras so I had to switch. This Sony camera is AMAZING and I feel silly for not switching sooner!

    I AM NOT A PROFESSIONAL PHOTOGRAPHER OR VIDEOGRAPHER, just a female who likes high-quality gear. I will compare it to the Canon Cameras I have returned/sold, rebought and still own (which are all the Canon Rebel Series, Canon 70/80d, Canon EOS 6D Mark II, and Canon M50). These are JUST the highlights of comparison to the Canon Cameras I own with my 9-month experience using this Sony camera.

    4k VIDEO DIFFERENCES over Canon (all Rebels, 70D, 80d, 6D Mark II, M50)
    * Actual 4k pixeled file, smooth and crisp.
    * Doesn’t have image stabilizer, but can fix in FCPX. Need a tripod or gimbal for moving videos.
    * Smaller 4k files than any Canon camera I own, faster upload/download and editing time
    * No record time limit
    * 6k sampling
    * Processes video files MUCH faster

    BATTERY LIFE DIFFERENCES over Canon (all Rebels, 70D, 80d, 6D Mark II, M50)
    * Similar to 80d/Mark II
    * Option to plug the battery directly into the wall for continuous power. Need to buy this plug separately.
    * Can charge camera as you use it too

    AUTO-FOCUS DIFFERENCES over Canon (all Rebels, 70D, 80d, 6D Mark II, M50)
    * Faster autofocus but not perfect for video (still quicker than Canon)
    * Super fast autofocus for images

    SOUND QUALITY DIFFERENCES over Canon (all Rebels, 70D, 80d, 6D Mark II, M50)
    * Useable audio, much better than Canon PERIOD. (still would use external mic but a great back-up audio option)

    Obviously, there is A LOT more great features than this but these were the most important ones for me (coming from Canon). The camera does not have any heating issues, haven’t had it shut off on me yet in 9 months of using it. I didn’t have an issue with the shoe being on top, as I hardly used a gimbal (some didn’t like that). Also, the colors are nice, perfect for my skin tone (not too blue) and I prefer it over the Canon. I know I probably may change my mind as Canon releases its newer models but for now, I’m very pleased with this Sony. GO SONY!!!!!!! I hope this somewhat helps you 🙂

    This is one of few APS-C that does eye AF for humans and animals, which is exactly what I need and why I bought it.

    I wanted a camera that’s small and lightweight for taking pictures of my dog on the walk/hike. Yeah, this is my ‘dog cam’. Without IBIS can be an issue for some but most of my lenses either have the build-it image stabilizer or prime lenses with f1.4/1.8 wide open aperture, so getting reasonable shutter speed is relatively easy. The high ISO performance of this camera is only mediocre.

    Surprisingly, I think Sony’s menu system is great. I use the customized menu most of the time but I also never had issues finding a setting from the menu system, at least it’s not better/worse than Nikon and Canon, and it is a lot less confusing compared to Fuji’s menu, which is the worst IMO.

    Here are some tips for getting the most out of the A6400:

    1. Turn off the Picture Profile when shooting still.
    2. Only shoot with manual exposure, manual WB. AUTO WB is all over the place when shooting outdoors.
    3. Can’t trust EVF or the screen, learn to read the histogram.
    4. Shooting with MF lenses should pair with external monitor.
    5. Get good lenses and fast lenses to avoid boosting ISO beyond 1600.
    * Spare batteries

    For video:
    1. Only shoot with manual exposure, manual focus and manual WB.
    2. Use HLG if you are not good with colour grading, or SLOG-2 if you are. Adobe PP has the colour banding issue with SLOG-2 when pushing too far, Davinci Resolve 17 does it better.
    3. Make sure to turn on Project Color Management in Davinci Resolve and use Wide Colour Gamma.
    4. Get a good gimbal and forget about IBIS.
    5. Rig it out to shoot handheld and forget about IBIS.
    6. Use an external monitor.
    7. Spare batteries/dummy battery with an external battery pack.

    Get out and take some pictures and stop worrying about the features you don’t have.

    Enjoy your A6400!

    Very good quality. Camera shoots good pic. One con is lack of image stabilizer. Lenses stabilizer cheesy not working as it’s shown on You Tube videos. You wanna shoot videos in stable mood have to use gimbal or tripod. Framing function is useless. It shoots only one format video. Three frame formats on the screen don’t add anything. Just white lines without any purpose. Coded videos have large files. 4K video code is uploading for ever. I couldn’t write any function coded video on my MACBOOK PRO 2015 although I have the newest software installed. I could upload videos on I Movie through USB cable but time of uploading was over 30 min. For 5 clips each about 3 minutes long. Those people from You Tube who advertise 4K video capacity for 2 or 3 hours of constant recording simply lie. Uploading such a big file takes maybe 24 hours if you have proper program installed on your Lap Top. You cannot record more than 30 or 45 minutes on one battery charge of constant recording. Or even less. Batteries are very weak and go out of power fast. Be careful when buying this camera.

    Ordered this camera ahead of my vacation after reading the good reviews about it. When I got it, right out of the box, on my first attempt to take a picture I got a “Camera Error” message and camera froze. Message suggested to turn it off then back on but the switch was irresponsive during this state. The only way to reset it was to take the battery out. I thought maybe this is just a one time thing, some configuration problem, but no, I was getting that everytime I press the button to take a picture. Searching on the internet I found that this seems to be a common problem with this camera. Now I have to return it asking for a replacement and hoping that I get a functional one in time before my vacation starts. Looking at this now, I feel like I paid $1500 for a “brick”. Hope that the replacement I get doesn’t have this problem and I get to enjoy this camera

    UPDATE: Got the replacement from Amazon. This is indeed a good camera, with lots of features for a beginner like me to play with, well worth the money.

    So I had to ask my son which camera was best and he told me Sony. Then proceeded to advise on this one as it was his 1st and he really liked it. He is now on his 3rd Sony, only upgraded. It will take me awhile to learn all the functions but so far, great camera.

    This is a wonderful camera for the money. It is perfect for videography as it records in full 4k 24p. The colour science included with this camera is way beyond other cameras I have used at this price range.

    But don’t take my word for it, there are lots of wonderful YouTube videos that review this camera. I’d suggest looking there for a comprehensive review.

    If you are doing YouTube videos then you should also look at pairing this up with a Sigma F1.4/30mm prime lens. If vlogging, then go for the Sigma F1.4/16mm lens.

    Good luck!

    As a former semi-professional photographer, I was looking for a compact camera to use for daily/family life and the occasional photo/video project, so I could get rid of my clunky pro gear (Canon 5d Mark ii). Obviously it’s not full frame, so there is a slight compromise in the look/depth of images, but in general this camera produces amazing results. It’s actually better in low light than the 5d Mark ii (which is now a few generations old). My only two qualms are: 1.) Lack is in-body IS. It’s pretty difficult to take steady video without a gimbal or tripod, and 2.) Poor battery life. I highly recommend buying multiple batteries, and always having a backup charged! Overall, I’d HIGHLY recommend this camera!
