I have used stabilizers in the past. This one offers support for 2.5 pound cameras while not being that heavy itself. It is made from aluminum, which helps with rigidity and light weight. The instructions that come with the device are a fold out sheet, and a separate card with troubleshooting tips. While it was helpful, I ended up using the manufacturer’s online video, which does an even better job of explaining set up. Setup requires balancing the camera while on the included fold-out stand, adjusting multiple axis. It was a little tricky for me to set up, with a few false starts until I was successful. Once I had successfully done it once, it was easier next time.

I shot footage using both an iPhone and my mirrorless camera. In both cases the stabilizer worked well. I briefly tried the manufacturer’s software for my iPhone, which is not required to use the stabilizer. It paired quickly with my iPhone with no intervention required. Controls on the stabilizer include a thumb operated joystick for pan and tilt, and a knob that can be used for several functions. Controls were easy to use, and the small OLED display is easy to see. The stabilizer comes with the aforementioned tabletop tripod stand, charging cable (charges via USB-C), and a variety of coiled cables to interface cameras to the stabilizer. All of it comes packed in a foam case. All axis lock to help with transport.

The stabilizer works well – better than some I have used in the past, while being lighter. It hits a good price point where it is a step above inexpensive stabilizers made of plastic, while also being able to support 2-plus pound cameras. I found with both my iPhone and my mirrorless camera that it worked very well. The controls are intuitive, and for the most part I was able to figure things out. It has become part of my toolset for shooting professional looking videos.

Fantastic. For the last six months or so I’ve been using Feiyutech’s AK2000C gimbal for my Canon DSLR, and while I love it I quickly realised that the situations in which I’m liable to use a device like this lend themselves more to smartphone videography than a bulky camera, so I was over the moon when I got the chance to test the G6.

This thing is just as good as the AK2000C in terms of build quality, stability and attention to detail. It comes in a fairly handy foam storage case (oddly not sealable and lacking a handle to make it a carry case, though), and all the necessary components sit securely in their place. The accessory box positively explodes with a mass of shutter release cables for Canon, Panasonic and Fujifilm cameras, though I pushed those aside as I was only interested in mounting my smartphone.

The smartphone attachment accessory feels secure and springy, easy to pop the phone in and out without any hassle, and the accessory itself screws easily into the quick release plate of the gimbal. Attaching it is a piece of cake. What wasn’t a piece of cake, though, was balancing the axes with a smartphone attached. The lighter weight of the phone compared to a DSLR made it a lot trickier to dial in the correct adjustments to get it properly centred. While a heavy DSLR will let you know immediately when you’re off balance a smartphone is a little too light to give you immediate feedback, so allow yourself a little extra time to get it just right on your first time out.

Now, while this is easily a 5 star piece of kit I do have a slight complaint, and it’s about the instructions. When I first used the AK2000C months ago I was coming to gimbals as a complete novice, and I found the instructions impenetrable. It took hours to figure out why I was screwing up, and in the end it marred my enjoyment of my first day with the device. Now I have a little more experience I found the G6 Max a lot easier to set up, but the instructions were just as vague as they were with the other model.

I wouldn’t want Feiyutech to include a massive manual in the box but what would be useful would be, in addition to the simple quick start guide for people who know what they’re doing, a link to a page on their website that includes detailed instructions for absolute beginners, written in simple language to explain *why* each step matters. The instructions as they are right now aren’t very intuitive, and they’re not all that helpful for people who are being newly introduced to this kind of thing.
